A support group for those grieving the death of a relative or friend
will be offered in Sacred Heart's O'Hagan Hall (church basement),
on Wednesdays June 3-July 8 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
Facilitator will be Tish Baker, a mental health counselor,

Are you angry about some church-related issue? Have you been hurt or rejected by a church person? Has your present marital status left you estranged or unwelcome in the Catholic Church? Are you participating in another church but still feel that “I’m a Catholic and I’ll always be a Catholic.” Do you feel uncomfortable saying “I’m a spiritual person but I’m not religious?” Would you like someone to listen to the events, people or circumstances which brought you to your present religious status?

These listening sessions are an opportunity to discuss your past, present or future relationship to the Catholic faith community in a safe, discrete, and welcoming environment. We’re here to listen, not to judge. If there is some way we can be helpful to you in your present spiritual circumstance, we will arrange whatever additional help or assistance you desire as a followup to the listening session.

“Catholics and the Word of God”
Presented by
Fr. Jerry Kopacek

In the fall of 2008, 253 Catholic bishops from around the world gathered in Rome for the World Synod of Bishops on "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church." The aim of the Synod was to fashion a creative pastoral response which would help Catholics better understand Scripture and relate it to their everyday lives. In this session, Fr. Kopacek will review the main highlights of the 21-day Synod and explore the important recommendations which the bishops made to Pope Benedict XVI.

Fr. Jerry Kopacek is pastor of St. Edward Parish in Waterloo. He attended Iowa State University and the University of Iowa College of Law and earned his Masters of Divinity degree from St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore. Fr. Kopacek was ordained in 1988 and Tuesdayhas served on the faculty at Catholic high schools in Dyersville and Mason City and as pastor or associate pastor at parishes in Dyersville, Marshalltown, Forest City, Lake Mills, Buffalo Center, Springbrook and Marion. He was pastor of St. Edward Parish from 1999 to 2004 and was reassigned to St. Edward in 2006.

“Is There a Place for God in the
Modern World?”
Presented by
Archbishop Daniel Kucera OSB

The modern world is reaping the benefits of centuries of scientific progress, but the exaggerated importance of the human intellect threatens to replace faith in the presence of a personal God. Archbishop Kucera calls the modern tendency to trust in the ability of human beings to control life and the universe "the spiritual DNA of Adam and Eve." In this presentation, he will examine the role of science and faith in the modern world and our need to recover an awareness of faith as an encounter with a personal God.

Archbishop Kucera was ordained in 1949. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Joliet, Illinois in 1977 and bishop of Salina, Kansas in 1980. He served as Archbishop of Dubuque from 1984 to 1995. He is presented retired and lives in Dubuque.

Wednesday, August 12
“”
Presented by
Dr. David Ard

For most of human history it was taken for granted that marriage was the intimate union of a man and a woman. The Catholic Church and many others believe that it still is, but there is a growing popular movement in favor of same-sex unions or same-sex marriage. This session will examine the social, historical and theological arguments on both sides of this emotional public debate.
