The Future at Sacred Heart Parish
As
a follow-up to our Centennial Renewal,
we are hoping to hear from people of all ages
to determine the future direction & mission of
our parish.
In order to do this, we are inviting various age
groups
to meet to discuss their hopes, their needs,
and their insights as we move forward.
If you do only ONE THING this
Lent,
please come share your thoughts and ideas
with a “Focus Group” at ONE of these dates/times:
Wednesday,
March 10th from 6:30-7:30pm
OR
Sunday,
March 28th from 9:30-10:30am
Start
thinking about some sample questions for the
discussions . . . .
What
do other churches have or do that you would like to
see at Sacred Heart?
How do you believe Sacred heart should respond to our
changing neighborhood?
What are we, with God, going to do about it?
Groups
meet in the following
locations:
Ages 19-25 meet in the Rectory Classroom
Ages 26-40 meet in the Dining Room
Ages 41-55 meet in O’Hagan Hall
Over 55 meet in the Church
(Parish teens have already had a
session.)

began February 25th.
The three-fold mission of Lent:
Prayer
Fasting
Almsgiving
Fast
& Abstinence Regulations
1) Catholics who
are 14 years of age or older are required to abstain
from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent.
2) Catholics who are 18 to 59 years of age
are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday.
This means that only one full meal is allowed on
these days,
and we may not eat between meals.
* Those with medical and other health issues are
excused from these
requirements and are encouraged to substitute other
acts of penance,
works of charity, and prayer.

Spiritual Safari”
Lenten Enrichment Series
Monday Evenings, February 22, March 1, 8 and 22.
6:30-8:15pm. St. Edward Parish, Waterloo
This year's four-part Lenten Enrichment Series will
explore the many facets of spirituality, including
ways in which to discover our peaceful savannahs,
face the challenges of unfriendly terrain, and search
for our authentic spiritual self. The sessions will
be presented by staff members from Prairiewoods
Franciscan Spirituality Center in Hiawatha and will
include a combination of spiritual guidance, ritual,
and group interaction.

Through Lent”
Weekly Faith-Sharing Guide

This lectionary-based faith-sharing resource is
designed for new or existing small groups who wish to
meet during Lent. It provides an opening ritual, a
reflection on the week's Gospel, questions for
discussion, and a closing prayer for each Sunday in
Lent as well as Holy Thursday and Good Friday. This
small-group resource was created by biblical scholar
and author Art Zannoni and is appropriate for adults
and young adults. Contact the Adult Formation Office
(234-9912), if your group wishes to use this resource
or if you are interested in joining a new small group
for Lent.

Earth”
Bible Study
March 10, 17, 24, 31 and April 7. 6:30-8:00pm

This six-week bible study experience examines the
biblical foundation for environmental stewardship and
Catholic action on global climate issues. It combines
personal reflection and group discussion in a way
which leads to prayerful transformation and
responsible action.

“Women in the Old Testament”
Monday afternoons, February 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15.

This five-week study from the Little Rock Scripture
series will examine the role of women in the Old
Testament. Participants will discover that women have
rich stories that are vital to God's relationship
with the covenant people. Their stories offer courage
and insight to people living in any age. $13.00

This opportunity is designed for Catholic adults and
young adults who have not celebrated the Sacrament of
Reconciliation recently or others who have questions
about how or why Catholics celebrate this sacrament.
This session will address practical questions like
when and how often Catholics go to confession, what
formats are available, how to prepare, and what to
say. No registration.

Justice Lenten Retreat
“Lent Through the Eyes of Dorothy Day”
Saturday, March 6. 9:00am-3:30pm
O'Hagan Hall, Sacred Heart Parish, Waterloo
Our annual Social Justice Lenten Retreat is designed
to help people of faith focus on the social justice
dimension of our Lenten journey to conversion and
Gospel living. This year's retreat will reflect on
the meaning and purpose of Lent as reflected in the
life and writing of Dorothy Day, founder of the
Catholic Worker. It will be facilitated by Brian
Terrell, a member of the Des Moines Catholic Worker
community who worked with Dorothy Day during the last
years of her life.

“A People Never Before Known”
Sunday, February 21. 12:30-3:30pm
American Martyrs Retreat House, Cedar Falls
This Sunday afternoon mini-retreat will examine how
the Eucharist creates and nurtures the community of
disciples, "a people never before known." This is one
in a series of mini-retreat co-hosted by American
Martyrs and the Catholic Parishes in Waterloo and
funded in part by a grant from the Kucera Center at
Loras College. Registration is $10.00 per person
($5.00 for students).
