Final Wishes Workshop

November 13, 2010 • 9:30-11:30am.
O'Hagan Hall/Sacred Heart Parish, Waterloo

Co-sponsored by
Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare/Pastoral Care Staff
The Catholic Parishes in Waterloo/Adult Faith Formation

• • •

• Who will make health care decisions for you when you
can't make them yourself?
• What kind of medical treatment do you expect to
receive when you are dying or seriously ill?
• How comfortable do you want to be when you are dying
or seriously ill?
• What medical options are approved by the Catholic Church?
• What do you want your loved ones to know when you
are dying or seriously ill?

The Final Wishes Workshop helps participants identify and express how they want to be treated if they are seriously ill and unable to speak for themselves.

Participants have an opportunity to create two documents guiding healthcare in an emergency or at the end of life, a Living Will and Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare.

In addition, the workshop examines the medical, personal and spiritual issues which arise at the time of a serious illness or at the end of life. We will discuss specific ways in which persons may be comforted in their final days, options for end-of-life care which are compatible with the teachings of the Catholic Church, and give family members an opportunity to discuss privately among themselves the type of personal, spiritual and medical care they wish to receive if they are seriously ill and unable to speak for themselves.

This is the type of discussion every family should have in advance of an emergency situation to avoid confusion, disagreement and guilt at the time when decisions must be made about the care of a loved one who is unable to think or speak clearly for themselves.

This workshop is open to persons of all ages. We encourage family members or caretakers to attend the with loved ones and to attend for loved ones who are unable attend themselves.

Pre-registration is recommended but not required.

About Lectio
Lectio Divina is a Latin phrase meaning "holy reading." The practice of lectio consists of a prayerful, meditative listening to Holy Scripture which is commonly described in terms of four steps or "moments": reading, reflecting, responding, and resting.
In lectio, one listens to the texts as if in conversation with Christ. A regular encounter with Christ in this way leads to deeper friendship, trust and love. In lectio, conversation eventually gives way to communing or "resting" in God. The goal of this habit of holy listening is not to acquire more information about Scripture, but to allow the Word of God to shape our awareness and action.
Lectio Divina is one of the great treasures of the Judeo-Christian tradition and a form of prayer which originated in a devotional practice used by the Jewish people to explore the inner meaning of Scripture in the days of Jesus. It is a form of, and a step toward a more contemplative style of praying and living.

About the Retreat
This retreat is designed for any adult or young adult who feels a desire to learn more about this form of prayer and/or desires to develop a more contemplative form of praying and living in the midst of the everyday world. Individuals who have participated in Bridges to Contemplative Living with Thomas Merton may be particularly interested in this opportunity. Previous experience with lectio or contemplative prayer is not required.
The retreat will consist of one, six-hour training and practice session followed by six weekly practice sessions for participants who wish to continue growing in their ability to practice holy listening.

Faithful Parenting - NEW Offering

Introduction

Faithful Parenting is a faith formation and enrichment opportunity for Catholic parents sponsored by the Catholic Parishes in Waterloo.
Faithful Parenting is designed to prepare, encourage and support parents in their role as the “first heralds of faith“ for their children. Our goal is to help parents understand and fulfill their responsibility as the first teachers of faith.

Goals

Faithful Parenting is designed to help parents:
• understand the experiential or catechumenal model of conversion, by which children and adults come to know, understand and practice their faith.
• recognize the developmental characteristics and spiritual needs of children in various stages of growth from infancy to adolescence.
• appreciate the complementary roles of the family and the parish in the religious formation and education of children.
• understand the fundamental principles of the Catholic faith which parents must know in order to pass faith on to their children in word and deed.
• create “households of faith“ in which children see, hear, express and live their faith in age-appropriate ways.

Overview

The Faithful Parenting formation process begins with preparation for Baptism and continues through a series of annual formation opportunities for parents of young children ages 6 months to four years old. This chart provides a summary of the content for each session:

Baptism Preparation (Parents of Newborns and Infants)
This session introduces parents to the role of faith; the Paschal Mystery; Sacraments and the catechumenal conversion process; and the concept of parents as the “first heralds of faith” for their children. There is an opportunity to discuss the Baptism ritual and Baptism policies in the parishes.

Session One (Parents of Children 6 to 24 Months Old)
The first session introduces parents to the characteristics of the “Catholic Imagination,” rooted in the doctrines of Creation and Incarnation; the four dimensions of faith formation in children and adults; and the stages of faith development. There is an opportunity to discuss the child’s developmental needs and practical steps for faith formation at this age.

Session Two (Parents of Children 24 to 36 Months Old)
Session Two introduces parents to the role of mystery and story in life and in Revelation; the Eucharist as the source and summit of Catholic faith; characteristics of “Imaginative Faith;” and attitudes of the “Catholic Imagination.” There is an opportunity to discuss the child’s developmental needs and practical steps for faith formation at this age.

Session Three (Parents of Children 36 to 48 Months Old)
Session Three introduces parents to the relational nature of faith rooted in the Trinity; fundamentals of prayer; principles of Catholic moral teaching; guidelines for formation in human sexuality; and principles of positive discipline. There is an opportunity to discuss the child’s developmental needs and practical steps for faith formation at this age.

Session Four (Parents of Children 48 to 60 Months Old)
