Catholics age 15 through 59 are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
(Fasting means refraining from consuming food or drinks considered to be food outside of one regular meal and two smaller meals each day.
The smaller meals, if added together, should not exceed the main meal in quantity.)

Archdiocesan History Books Now Available!

Archdiocese of Dubuque 175th anniversary books. These beautiful books provide a detailed history of the beginnings of the Catholic Church in Iowa from the early 1800’s up to the present day. The Catholic parishes in Waterloo welcome individuals or families who are interested in joining the Catholic faith community
and anyone who is interested in learning more about the Catholic faith.

For individuals who have been baptized, catechized, and participating regularly in a Christian tradition,
the parishes offer the Rite of Christian Reception of Adults.

This process offers a combination of personal preparation and discernment in a small group format, combined with public liturgical ceremonies which celebrate an individual's gradual incorporation into the Catholic faith community.

Rite of Christian Reception of Adults

The Rite of Christian Reception of Adults (RCRA) is an adaptation of the Rite of Christian Initiation designed particularly for adults who have been baptized, catechized and are participating in another mainline Christian church. The Rite of Christian Reception is a shorter period of discernment and preparation which concentrates on the distinctive characteristics, rituals and teachings of the Catholic Church.

The next session dates are:
Tuesdays Mar. 20, 27, Apr. 10. 17. 24, May 1, 8, 22 from 6:30-8:00pm at Sacred Heart, rectory classroom.

Individuals participating in the Rite of Christian Reception meet weekly, generally for a period of about eight weeks and usually concludes with a profession of faith and celebration of First Eucharist and/or Confirmation during a Sunday Mass in the local parish.

Participants in the Rite of Reception are assigned a guide, a member of the Catholic faith community who will accompany them on their journey through the reception process.

Winter 2012 Series

“The Gospel of Mark”
Sunday, January 22, 2012
American Martyrs Retreat House, Cedar Falls

[Snow Date: January 29]

Presented by
Dr. Bill Mulcahey

About the Retreat

Here's an opportunity to spend some time reflecting on the Gospel of Mark, the source of the Sunday Gospel readings in Ordinary Time during the present lectionary cycle. Bill Mulcahey will help us see the "big picture" and Mark's basic message, all of which are reflected over the course of the year's readings. Bill writes: "Mark tells us basically that if you want to know Jesus you have to be disciples (a church) who follows him 'on the way.' Mark that challenges disciples of the Risen Jesus to move out of their comfort zone and into a world beset with opportunities and choices that come bundled in packages wrapped with personal pain and sometimes the disdain of others. It might be too much of a downer for people, but that’s the nature of the 'scariest' Gospel."

About the Presenter

Bill Mulcahey received his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (S.S.L.) from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. After spending fifteen years working in basic Christian communities and higher education in Latin America, he is now Director of Campus Ministry and professor in the Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Campus Ministry Department at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. He serves as an instructor for the Archdiocese of Dubuque's Lay Formation and Hispanic Diaconate Formation Programs. Bill and his wife Damaris reside in Cedar Rapids with their daughters, Shannon and Maureen. They are members of St. Matthew Parish.
